Ed Sheeran Reveals Eminem’s Raps Helped Him Conquer Stammer

For better or worse, it’s fair to say that the cultural impact of Eminem’s music knows no boundaries – especially now we know it helped Ed Sheeran conquer a speech impediment. When appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs on Sunday (May 7), Ed revealed that imitating Eminem’s rapping when he was younger helped him overcome his stammer.

During the May 7th episode of the show, Sheeran explained the influence The Marshall Mathers LP had on him. “My parents didn’t know the content of the album, and I must have been 9 when it came out, and when you’re 9 and someone is saying rude stuff, you wanna learn it. So I learnt it, and he raps at such a fast pace that my stammer would go. And that, weirdly enough, was the speech therapy that cured me. I then got awarded an award at a ‘stuttering gala’.”

Ed also selected “Stan,” one of Eminem’s smash hits, as one of the records he would take with him if he had to be stranded on a desert island.
